Alaska landscape transformed by warmer climate

Sinking villages perched on thawing permafrost, an explosion of timber-chewing insect populations, record wildfires and shrinking sea ice are among the most obvious and jarring signs that Alaska is getting warmer as the global climate changes, scientists say.

"We are the canary in the mine, unfortunately, and the harbinger of what is yet to come for the rest of the world," said Patricia Cochran, executive director of the Anchorage-based Alaska Native Science Commission.

Atmospheric temperatures in the remote state have risen 3.6 to 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 3 degrees C) over the past five decades, according to the recently released Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, a comprehensive study by scientists from eight nations.

That heating, most pronounced in winter and spring, is much more dramatic than in the rest of the world, which has had an average increase in land surface temperatures of 1 degree F (0.6 C) over the last century, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Many scientists believe the earth is warming because of the release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that trap solar heat in the atmosphere.

SINKING TOWNS

In the cooler interior regions, buildings are slumping and roads are buckling as permafrost -- frozen soil -- thaws and turns into softer, spongy soil. The Inupiat village of Shishmaref on a narrow Chukchi Sea barrier island is preparing to move as the town sinks into the ground.

"For those of us who live in the changing conditions every day, there's no question. We see it. We feel it every single day," Cochran said.

Satellite records released on Wednesday showed that sea ice coverage in the arctic region has fallen for the last four years with "unusually early springtime melting in areas north of Siberia and Alaska," according to a study by the University of Colorado, NASA and the University of Washington.

Shrinking sea ice has created hardships for sea animals like polar bears that find their prey at the ice's edge.

Heated-up waterways are throwing off long-established salmon cycles and, according to one scientist, have allowed a warmth-loving, salmon-wrecking parasite to thrive in the Yukon River.

Warming is accentuated in high-latitude regions like Alaska in part because of thinner atmospheres in the polar region, concentrating greenhouse gases, and in part because of the nature of atmospheric currents, according to studies.

Such changes have also contributed to falling ice coverage in the Arctic Sea, with spring and summer melting happening 17 days earlier than usual, according to the satellite study.

The disappearance of ice and snow uncovers dark surfaces of the ground and sea, which absorb more solar heat and warm up the landscape, said Vladimir Romanovsky, a permafrost expert at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Geophysical Institute.

The Arctic ice shelf has melted for the fourth straight year to its smallest area in a century, driven by rising temperatures that appear linked to a buildup of greenhouse gases, U.S. scientists said on Wednesday.

Scientists at NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center, which have monitored the ice via satellites since 1978, say the total Arctic ice in 2005 will cover the smallest area since they started measuring.

It is the least amount of Arctic ice in at least a century, according to both the satellite data and shipping data going back many more years, according to a report from the groups.

As of September 21, the Arctic sea ice area had dropped to 2.05 million square miles, the report said.

From 1978 to 2000, the sea ice area averaged 2.70 million square miles, the report said. It noted the melting trend had shrunk Inuit hunting grounds and endangered polar bears, seals and other wildlife.

The report warns that if melting rates continue, the summertime Arctic may be completely ice-free before the end of the century, echoing last year's findings from the Arctic Council, an eight-nation report by 250 experts.

The melting trend increasingly appeared to be caused by a buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the scientists said.

"It's increasingly difficult to argue against the notion that at least part of what we are seeing in the Arctic, in terms of sea ice, in terms of warming temperatures ... is due to the greenhouse effect," Mark Serreze, a research scientist at NSIDC, said in an interview.

"We've put a hit on the system and we are in the midst of a grand global experiment," Serreze said about the impact of global warming and ice melting on humans and animals. "We will have to live with the outcome."

The NSIDC, part of the University of Colorado at Boulder, helps NASA analyze satellite data.

Most scientists believe greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide that is released mainly from cars and utility smokestacks, cause global warming by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. Many believe global warming can lead to catastrophic consequences, including raising sea levels and strengthening weather events such as hurricanes.

One Arctic variation, known as Arctic Oscillation, an atmospheric circulation pattern that can push sea ice out of the area, had become less of an influence in the region since the mid-1990s, the report said.

Inuit hunters threatened by the melting of Arctic ice plan to file a petition in December accusing the United States of violating their human rights by fueling global warming. The Bush administration has opted out of the Kyoto Treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Inuit number about 155,000 people in Canada, Alaska, Greenland and Russia.

Scientists say the Arctic is warming faster than the rest of the globe because water or bare earth, once uncovered, soaks up more heat than ice and snow. That process means melting can spur even warmer temperatures and more melting.

i was a republican today.

let me start from the beginning...

i woke up at 5:00 a.m., like the usual monday. showered, and dressed - wore my green linen pants with my white dress shirt...went to work.

work was fine...read and wrote memos. came up with some new ideas for the company. met a new i.p. lawyer...had lunch with lawyers... someone gave me a slice of home-made banana bread. yummy.

after work i stopped by my mother's house. she was home...her big-ass lexus suv parked on the driveway. (don't even get me started on the suv)

as i unlocked the front door, a man came up behind me.

big smile. scruffy face. white shirt, chinos, and a tie. all k-mart brand.

and i have no way to say this in a politically correct way...so here it is. he was black.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- A lawyer resigned as vice chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party after a federal sting led to money-laundering charges accusing him of offering to "cleanse" drug proceeds for a legal client.

Lawrence Novak was arrested Tuesday at his home in Brockton after investigators said he allegedly offered to launder drug profits for a client awaiting trial on federal trafficking charges. The client is cooperating with investigators.

Federal authorities said they watched Novak, 54, deposit money in a Brockton bank.

Novak made an initial appearance in federal court Tuesday and was released on $25,000 bond. Neither he nor his attorney would comment on the charges.

Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican, called for Novak to step down while the investigation continues. Novak resigned his party position Tuesday after his release on bond.

In a statement, the state Republican chairman, Darrell Crate, said the charges are unrelated to Novak's GOP role. Novak was the party's treasurer in the late 1990s.

Novak is accused of encouraging drug defendant Scott Holyoke to sign false affidavits in an attempt to invalidate some of his prior state convictions. The false affidavits were to be used to reduce Holyoke's federal sentence.

Holyoke told Novak that he had more than $100,000 in cash in a safe deposit box, repeatedly telling the lawyer it was drug money, according to an affidavit by Internal Revenue Service agent Lauren Youngquist.

The affidavit said Novak told Holyoke he would take about $60,000 as a legal fee and offered to "clean" the rest of the cash.

Novak is due back in court on October 3. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

Raising another legal threat to the iPod music player, Creative Technology Ltd. said it has been awarded a U.S. patent for a song-navigation technology it claims is used on Apple Computer Inc.'s market-leading devices.

The Singapore-based digital audio company did not, however, say how it would attempt to enforce the patent. And some experts were skeptical that legal action could succeed at extracting cash from the maker of the world's most popular music players.

"Apple tried to claim invention, but this patent dispels that," said Craig McHugh, president of Creative Labs, a Milpitas-based subsidiary. "We are going to look at all the alternatives that the patent provides. We can look at legal remedies."

McHugh said the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the patent Aug. 9 for a user interface it developed long before the first iPods went on sale in October 2001. The technology is used, by Creative, in the Creative Zen and Nomad Jukebox MP3 players.

"We plan to be very vigorous in the defense of our intellectual property," said McHugh.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling declined to comment.

Creative's claims come less than a month after an iPod-related patent application made by Apple was rejected because archrival Microsoft Corp. had filed a similar application five months earlier. Some speculated Microsoft could demand a share of iPod sales.

Patent attorneys were skeptical, however, noting that patent rejections are common and that Apple can press its case in numerous other ways. Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple could appeal the rejection, or tweak its patent claim so it wouldn't overlap with Microsoft's or ask the patent office to determine which company came up with the technology first, the attorneys said.

It's too early in the process to determine who might prevail in the Microsoft case and the same is true with Creative's claims, said Randy Gard, an attorney with Carr & Ferrell LLP, a law firm that specializes in technology patents.

Claiming patent infringement "might be good in the press but it may not have relevance in the court," Gard said.

Gard wonders whether the controversies are a case of two competitors ganging up on Apple.

In July, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said the software giant would work with Creative and its other partners to produce better-designed MP3 players to counter the success of Apple's iPod.

Creative says it began shipping music players to the United States featuring the navigational technology in September 2000. That was more than a year before the October 2001 launch of iPod, according to McHugh.

Creative has struggled to match the success of the iPod, which was critically praised for its intuitive navigation.

Apple now owns 54 percent of the global MP3 player market while Creative has about 10 percent, industry analysts say.

i ran into a friend at school the other night who graduated in last May and still didn't have a job. he's married too...and his wife is from Korea so she can't work in the U.S. it was sad watching him struggle...and i didn't say anything about my own job situation...just listened and offered encouragement.

I had the honor of attending a presentation by "Big Al" tonight.

He was brilliant.

The presentation was regarding our environment. How WE are affecting . . . no . . . changing . . . hmmmmm, no . . . oh yeah, here's the better word . . . FUCKING UP planet Earth. Of course that's not what "Big Al" said . . . I'm using my own words here, but you get the picture. I don't have to be so P.C. about it. It makes me fucken pissed every time I see a suburbanite driving by in a Hummer or (pick a gas-guzzling S.U.V. flavor of the month).

Ladies and gents, if we don't change our ways now, in this century . . . in OUR lifetime and our childrens' lifetime, the Earth will see another mass extinction. Global suicide is what we are facing here . . . and WE are CAUSING IT. (Well, mostly Americans anyway)

It is depressing that with such people like Bush and company (and most fucken republican christian right), they are in denial or too fucken stupid to understand the science. Or worse, they do NOT want to understand, because they are only interested in raping the planet so they can fill their own wallets (TYCO and Enron come to mind here). And when the Republicans put idiots in charge of agencies - not because they have skill, knowledge, or merit, but only as a political pay-off - WE ARE IN SERIOUS FUCKEN TROUBLE. Senior MSNBC political analyst and Former Chief of Staff Lawrence O'Donnell asserts that Karl Rove, George W. Bush's chief political advisor, is the confidential source that revealed the identify of Valerie Plame as a CIA "operative".

"Karl Rove was Matt Cooper's source," states O'Donnell. "I have known this for months but didn't want to say it at a time that would risk me getting dragged into the grand jury."

If the revelation turn out to be accurate, "RoveGate" may join other recent controversies as tests of the power of blogs, podcasts and other Internet media to force stories into the mainstream news.

Karl Rove: Traitor for Politics?

Many have suggested that Plame was outed by the White House in retaliation for her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, charging that the Bush administration lied to the American people about US intelligence concerning weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Wilson had been sent to Niger to investigate documents that implied Iraq had attempted to illegally purchase uranium. Wilson reported to the CIA and the State Department that the information was "unequivocally wrong" and that the documents had been forged. The discredited information was used in the President's State of the Union address to support his Weapons of Mass Destruction case against Iraq.

In early October 2003, Newsweek reported that Rove had called MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews and told him that Wilson's wife was "fair game". White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters at the time that any suggestion that Rove had played a role in outing Plame was "totally ridiculous."

Because of the confidential nature of Plame's role, it's unknown whether any lives were lost as a result of her outing. At a minimum, her exposure eliminated her value as a CIA operative. The exposure of a covert government agent would violate the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Google Search Revealed Yellowcake Forgeries

According to an article on the forged "Yellowcake" documents at WikiPedia, it took International Atomic Energy Agency officials only a matter of hours to determine that the documents Wilson had discredited were fake. Using little more than a Google search, IAEA experts discovered indications of a crude forgery, such as the use of incorrect names of Niger officials. As a result, the IAEA reported to the U.N. Security Council that the documents were "in fact not authentic."

Vincent Cannistaro, the former head of counterterrorism operations at the CIA and the intelligence director at the National Security Council under Ronald Reagan, has suggested that "The documents were fabricated by supporters of the policy in the United States. The policy being that you had to invade Iraq in order to get rid of Saddam Hussein..."

Worse than Watergate?

Wilson charged that his wife's CIA association had been deliberately exposed by the White House in order to destroy her career, in retaliation for his public charge that the Bush administration had lied to the American people about U.S. intelligence concerning weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. In an article in The New York Times on 6 July 2003, Wilson denounced the Bush administration, saying that "some of the intelligence related to Iraq's nuclear program was twisted to exaggerate the Iraqi threat."

In an article at Salon, John Dean, counsel to President Nixon, has stated "In blowing the cover of CIA agent Valerie Plame to take political revenge on her husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, for telling the truth, Bush's people have out-Nixoned Nixon's people. And my former colleagues were not amateurs by any means."

Space Shuttle and the horse's ass

Say friend, did you know that the US Standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8 1/2 inches.

That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used?

Because that's the way they built them in England, and the US railroads were built by English expatriates.

So, just what does this have to do with the exploration of space?

Well, there's an interesting extension of the story about railroad gauge and horses' behinds. When we see a Space Shuttle sitting on the launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are the solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at a factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs might have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad from the factory runs through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than a railroad track, and the railroad track is about as wide as two horses' behinds. So a major design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was originally determined by the width of a horse's ass.

if i stack up all of the papers i have at my desk (work desk, not at home)...the stack will reach over my head. ok, so i AM on the shorter side (5'8") but i'm not THAT short.

so i'm wondering...is this what's causing the death of trees? bunch of lawyers copying and printing stuff for the government?

i have an idea...let's grow trees using stem cells. maybe we can even clone paper in factories so we don't have to cut down any more trees!?!?!

a parent's love for his/her child is always greater than what is returned. accordingly, the parent should love without expectations. that is the nature of the parent-child relationship. respectively, the child will grow up and love his/her child with greater passion than what is returned to him/her. it is only then they will realize the true nature of the his/her parent's gift. and a gift it is...love of a parent...without contract nor consideration. it is simply offered and received, as it should be...from the parent to a child.

often, some parents will expect the child to grow up and return the affections and/or caretaking afforded. of course, this will rarely happen. even when the child does return the caretaking, it is out of sense of duty or feeling of owing a debt - to be paid off, with heavy interest.

few parents will even go far as asking or demanding that the child give up his/her dreams or retard his/her achievements to pay off this "love debt." these parents were never really parents at all, but creditors or bankers disguised as one...simply playing a role to collect on the interests for their own selfish benefits.

so one must ask him or her self...am i a parent or a banker? if one is truly a parent, then love the child with every fiber of being...and give the gift of love...and expect nothing in return. and never ever ask them to shorten their reach for glory...parents should lift up the child's reach so they may reach farther and higher...not burden them to retard their potential.
